Healthy Halloween Treats For Toddlers

Yes, Halloween is famous for sweets, treats, and chocolates, but when our children are toddlers, they are still exploring food and you don’t want to overload them with sugar. Healthy doesn’t have to be boring and it also doesn’t have to mean bland. We want to treat our toddlers, and we want them to eat what we’ve made. There’s nothing more demoralizing than spending ages making something only for them to refuse it or even worse, just throw it on the floor.

Here we have some healthy Halloween treat ideas for toddlers that they will hopefully love, but there are no guarantees!

Mummy crackers

These crackers look suitably spooky for the Halloween table and they are basically cheese and crackers, so if they like that they’re going to eat it. You can use bread, toast slices, bruschetta or crackers, whichever you have in or you like. Layer up your favourite cheese slices or cut up cheese in strips to make the mummy bandages, use olives or grapes for eyes or cucumber pieces and a bit of tomato for a lolling tongue if they like it.

Apple teeth

Ok, so these technically have a sweet element in them with the marshmallows, if you don’t want to use marshmallows you can use nuts or seeds. Cut your apples in half and then into wedges. Spread peanut butter or your choice of nut spread onto one side of each wedge, and layer mini marshmallows in between to make the teeth. Split one mini marshmallow into two for the eyes and dot with black food colouring or an edible black icing pen. Stick them onto the apple for scary eyes.

Vegetable Jack O’ lanterns

Grab some different coloured peppers, the 3 packs you get in supermarkets are perfect for this. Chop the heads off, remove the seeds and pith, then carve a scary face in the front like it’s a pumpkin. Stuff with your favourite vegetables like carrot and cucumber sticks, breadsticks or celery and add a dip if they like it. If you’re lucky they might eat the peppers too. If they don’t, stuff them to eat for your dinner, delicious.

Vampire bat tortillas and spooky salsa

Use tortillas and cut out bat shapes, if you’re not good at freehand, draw a template onto cardboard or paper and then cut around that instead. Brush a little oil on both sides, dust with some smoked paprika, then place on a non-stick or lined baking sheet and bake in a preheated oven at 180◦C. Bake for around 7 minutes on each side. Serve with your choice of dip. I love the blood red of the salsa with these bats, but if your children aren’t keen on salsa you could try it with beetroot hummus or ketchup, whatever works for you and your family.

Witch/Wizard Broomsticks

You will need some pretzel sticks or bread sticks, chives and your favourite cheese slices. Lay the cheese squares out separately and then slice halfway up in even strips to make the brush part of the broom. Then roll it around the pretzel or bread stick and secure it with the chives. If your children really hate the green bits then leave them out.

Scary banana ghosts: Boonanas!

So simple and effective. Cut your bananas in half and use melted chocolate (plain or dark is healthier than milk chocolate) in a piping bag to form the eyes and scary mouth. You can use raisins instead if you don’t want to use chocolate, but they will be harder to stick onto the banana. Alternatively, just cut out the eyes and mouth.
