Living in Britain means lots of rainy days, especially when you have all the kids at home and you need to entertain them. With half term coming up and it’s particularly rainy today, my thoughts are turning to rainy-day activities to do in the school holidays. I’m all about saving money too, so I’m making them all free ideas.
Use your local area
Your local library or museum will have activities to do and they often have exhibitions running as well. Libraries don’t just have books, they will have story sacks, storytime, music time, and activities. Look at your local council websites for free activities going on and note down which ones can be done in all weathers. Don’t be afraid to don wet weather gear and just go for it, you can always warm up afterward with a hot chocolate, that’s half the fun!
Movie time
It sounds obvious but sometimes it’s so nice to just snuggle up with some homemade snacks and watch a movie together. Ban the devices and make it a really nice family time.
Arts and Crafts
Grab your craft tub and odds and ends and get creative. I bet you have lots of unopened kits lying around that you haven’t gotten around to using yet.
Some more ideas:
- Lego kits
- Jigsaws
- Treasure hunt
- Scavenger hunt
- Hide and seek
- Board games
- Obstacle race indoors
- Word games like I spy, my shopping basket
- Write a sentence then fold the paper down, continue the story
- Chinese whispers
- Scrapbooking or digital scrapbook
- Journaling
- Gratitude list
- Interactive educational games
- Baking
- Kids yoga on YouTube, cosmic kids is our favourite
- Dancing class on YouTube
I hope that’s given you some inspiration and some confidence to attack those rainy days without dreading them. If you have kids that need to burn energy, do a dance or yoga class together, there are loads of free ones on Youtube, then make an obstacle race out of cushions and household obstacles. Follow it up with an activity like crafting or cooking, then finish with a movie or interactive game. The day will soon pass by and they will have a great time.

It’s chucking it down here so I am all for having a cosy, afternoon in my pj’s. hehehe
What great ideas. When it’s wet out we like to either bake or watch movies. x
These are some lovely ideas. It’s wet here too, so we are doing a Halloween movie and snacks this afternoon! #blogtober22 x
